Captain Charles Young and the Ninth U.S. Cavalry stepped ashore in San Francisco in 1902. Captain Young was only one of three Black officers serving in the U.S. Army. Buffalo Soldiers served in California, primarily in Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks. They were tasked with protecting the parks from illegal activities like poaching and timber theft, as well as fighting wildfires. The Buffalo Soldiers also played a role in park development, including building trails and roads. |
